Easy Witch’s Hat Cupcakes

October 20, 2015 by Aida 16 Comments

These Easy Witch’s Hat Cupcakes are one of the most perfect Halloween treats. They’re festive and fun; plus they’re incredibly easy to make. My Easy Witch’s Hat Cupcakes start with a fluffy, moist homemade vanilla cupcake recipe, but if you want to make these Halloween cupcakes even easier, you can grab your favorite box mix and ready made frosting. Anyone and everyone who loves the Halloween spirit will fall in love with these Easy Witch’s Hat Cupcakes!

Easy Witch's Hat Cupcakes|The Crafting Foodie

A few weeks ago I was recruited to help out with a bake sale, and without a second thought, I knew I’d make cupcakes. After running bake sales since I was in middle school, I’ve quickly learned that cupcakes are, by far, the first items to sell out. So, I knew right away that cupcakes it would be.

And while I love crazy flavors and stuffed cupcakes, since the audience for this bake sale was children, I decided to stick with good old vanilla cupcakes and vanilla frosting. But here’s the deal with these Easy Witch’s Hat Cupcakes – you can choose any flavor cake your heart desires. You can go nuts. Or go old-school like I didΒ  because the flavor of the cake has absolutely no impact on these adorable and easy Halloween treats.

When it comes to the frosting, you can use my easy, light, and delicious homemade vanilla frosting, or you can opt for a ready made one. The only restrictions on the frosting flavor is that it’s light enough in color to tint green. While chocolate frosting is one of my favorite frosting flavors, it wouldn’t really work with the design for these Easy Witch’s Hat Cupcakes because the chocolate cone would blend in with the chocolate frosting. Plus, in my world, witches are green, so you need that green frosting tucked under the ice cream cone hat!

Speaking of ice cream cone hats, I was lucky enough to come across these Oreo ice cream cones at our local market. But if you can’t find chocolate ice cream cones, you can do what I did for my Melted Witch Cake. I simply dipped a sugar cone in some black candy melts. For me, black candy melts + sugar cone = witch’s hat.

So, all you need to make these Easy Witch’s Hat Cupcakes are cupcakes, green frosting, a chocolate wafer cookies, chocolate sugar cones, some melted chocolate and tinted frosting for some of the details. It’s so darn easy that my 7 year-old helped me assemble them.

Ingredients
  • For the Vanilla Cupcakes
  • 1 1/4 cups cake flour
  • 1 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup canola oil (or any neutral tasting oil)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tsp vinegar
  • For the Vanilla Frosting:
  • 2 cups unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 4 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp heavy cream or whole milk
  • To Assemble the Cupcakes
  • 15 chocolate sugar cones
  • 15 chocolate wafer cookies
  • 1/8 cup chopped chocolate or chocolate chips
  • Green food color (I used electric green by AmeriColor)
  • Yellow food color (I used egg yellow by AmeriColor)
  • Purple Food Color (I used electric purple by AmeriColor)
  • Zip top bags for piping decorations
  • A piping bag fitted with a tip of your choice for the green frosting
Instructions
For the Cupcakes:
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Line a standard muffin tin with paper liners.
  3. Mix the milk and vinegar in a liquid measuring cup. Set aside.
  4. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cake flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  5. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs until frothy and lighter in color (about 2 or 3 minutes)
  6. Add the vanilla and oil. Whisk for a minute or two.
  7. Slowly add 3/4 of a cup of sugar, while constantly whisking.
  8. Add 1/2 of the dry ingredients. Mix until combined.
  9. Add 1/2 of the milk mixture. Mix until combined.
  10. Repeat until all of the dry and wet ingredients are combined. (The batter will be very thin.)
  11. Fill each cupcake liner about 1/2 full.
  12. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes or until the center of the cupcake springs back when gently pressed.
  13. Allow the cupcakes to cool in the cupcake tin for about 5 minutes. Then turn the cupcakes on to a cooling rack to cool completely.
For the Vanilla Frosting:
  1. In the bowl of a mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the butter until creamy.
  2. Add the sugar, and beat until fluffy.
  3. Add the salt and vanilla. Beat until just combined.
  4. Add the cream, and beat until fluffy.
To Assemble the Cupcakes:
  1. Melt the chocolate chips.
  2. Place the melted chocolate in a zip top bag, and snip the corner of the bag.
  3. Pipe a thin line of chocolate along the edge of the chocolate sugar cone. Immediately place the cone on top of a chocolate wafer cookie. Set on a parchment lined sheet pan to cool. Repeat with all cones.
  4. Once cones are attached to the wafers, place the tray in the fridge to cool.
  5. While the cones are chilling, take about 3 tbs of frosting and tint purple. Place the frosting in a zip top bag and snip the corner to make a piping bag.
  6. Use the exact some process to make a bag of yellow frosting.
  7. Tint the remaining frosting bright green.
  8. Fill your piping bag fitted with a tip of your choice.
  9. Remove the witches hats from the refrigerator.
  10. Pipe a wide band of purple frosting along the edge of where the cone meets the chocolate wafer.
  11. Using the yellow frosting, pipe a small square in the middle of each purple band. Set aside.
  12. Using the green frosting, pipe a healthy dollop of frosting on the top of each cupcake.
  13. Place one witch’s hat on top of each cupcake.
